10 ways to transform your bathroom on a budget

Our bathrooms are one of the most used rooms in our houses, yet often, redecorating them can seem like a big and expensive task many of us put off. Our experts give their top tips on how to transform your bathroom without breaking the bank.

1. Bring the outdoors in

Houseplants are one of the biggest home interior trends right now, so why not add them into your bathroom for an at-home spa feel? Many houseplants thrive in humid conditions and even reduce humidity and mould in the bathroom, as well as reducing the amount of toxins in the air. So you're not only adding greenery into your bathroom, you're making it a healthier place to live.

2. Update your shower curtain

A survey of UK adults revealed that 34% of people have never changed or washed their shower curtain, so if you're looking to transform your bathroom then look no further. Replacing your shower curtain for a fresh and clean curtain is a quick and easy way to spruce up your bathroom. Consider a bold colour or pattern to really make a statement.

3. Refresh your walls

People underestimate just how much a fresh lick of paint can change a space, and the bathroom is no different. While most people think the bathroom has to be white and neutral, why not make your space feel brand new by switching up the colour scheme. Go for loud, lavish colours to really make the space pop like Erica Vonderwall, who transformed her plain bathroom into her own ray of sunshine by using pattern tiles and a bold paint colour.

4. Fake the tile look

Tiling is a specialist skill, and if you don't have the budget to hire a professional, or the time to learn how to do it yourself, try self-adhesive wallpaper. Many stores now sell faux tile effect adhesive that is waterproof, mould resistant and easy to do yourself. This look will instantly lift your old and tired bathroom and mimic a premium feel.

5. Declutter

This might seem like a simple solution, but taking tips from Marie Kondo, tidying and decluttering can transform any space, but especially your bathroom. Put your lesser-used products away and clear out any cosmetics or medicines that have surpassed their expiration date. If you're not sure what to get rid of, consider adding smart storage solutions in your bathroom to keep your products out of mind and tidy.

6. Experiment with wallpaper

Maximalist wallpaper designs are on trend right now, so why not incorporate the style in your bathroom? Just choose any wallpaper you like and ensure to use extra strong wallpaper adhesive and a final, clear layer of varnish to help protect it. Using bold and fun patterns will automatically make your walls stand out and be the statement of your bathroom.

7. Clean the grout

This is straight out of the Mrs Hinch playbook and for good reason. Cleaning your grout can automatically make your bathroom look like new. Just grab an old toothbrush and a tough cream cleaner to get rid of any dirt and grime that has built up.

8. Add a new mirror

Never underestimate the power of a mirror in any space. Mirrors increase the perception of space and make your room look bigger, as well as reflecting light around the room making it more airy and bright. Add or update your bathroom mirror to create a light and airy space that invites you in.

9. Ditch the blinds

To get even more natural light into your bathroom, get rid of any blinds or curtains. While this may seem like a risky move, you can actually buy window film that will give you the privacy of frosted or etched glass at a fraction of the cost.

As you can see from Rachel Rogers, who kindly showed us her bathroom transformation, the clever use of their window covering means ample amounts of natural light is able to shine through.

10. Upgrade your shower

One of the easiest but most effective ways to update your bathroom is getting a new showerhead. Opt for an opulent finish such as brass, to make your bathroom look more expensive, or choose fixtures with jets and spray settings for a spa-like feel.

Redecorating your bathroom shouldn't need to break the bank. These simple tips are easy to complete yourself but they'll make your bathroom feel like a completely new and inviting space, without having to splash the cash.
