1. Cottagecore - 8.9 billion views

By far the trend with the most views on TikTok is cottagecore, which has racked up almost 9 billion in total.

Cottagecore is a celebration of an idealised rural life that has boomed in popularity in recent years, especially amongst Gen Z, focusing on traditional design and vintage furniture.

2. Dark academia - 1.8 billion views

Another subculture to have exploded in popularity on TikTok is that of 'dark academia', with 1.8 billion views on the platform.

This aesthetic is based around all things scholarly and in terms of interiors, takes the form of moody, dark-toned walls and quirky academic touches reminiscent of Hogwarts.

3. House plants - 839.6 million views

In third place are house plants, with over 839 million views on TikTok. House plants can be the perfect finishing touch for a room and act as a natural statement piece or fill an empty space such as an alcove.

And even if you're not naturally green-fingered, plenty of indoor house plants need very little looking after and will thrive without constant attention.

1. Line art - 9.5 million posts

Over on Instagram, it's line art that's the most popular trend, with 9.5 million posts. Simple line drawings are nothing new but they've found regained popularity in the world of interiors over the last few years.

From high street homeware to art prints by independent artists, this style is particularly popular, with many pieces featuring simple drawings of a woman's face, with few features.

2. Shabby chic - 9.3 million posts

The second most popular trend from Insta is shabby chic, with 9.3 million posts, a style that celebrates pieces and furnishings showing signs of wear and tear, with newer pieces sometimes being distressed to achieve this aged vibe.

In some ways, shabby chic can be likened to the cottagecore trend that was so popular on TikTok, achieving a rustic and traditional look, while often using newer pieces.

3. House plants - 8.3 million posts

As was the case with TikTok, house plants were the third most popular trend when it came to Instagram, with over 8 million posts in general.

House plants are a great way to naturally freshen up any indoor space and they can also help to make you feel more relaxed and at ease.

2. Terrazzo - 91.8 million views

Terrazzo is a style of tiling that has seen a huge increase in popularity in recent years and has amassed over 91 million views on TikTok.

In second place are quartz countertops. As well as being a very sophisticated look for the surfaces in your bathroom, quartz is a very durable material, resistant to scratches, moisture and impacts.
