New Baxi Bermuda BBU HE – the Back Boiler is back!

Baxi Bermuda BBU Fire Front

Now I am talking over 40 years ago when Baxi first launched the Baxi Bermuda Back Boiler.  Yep, back in the “good old days”, boilers were big bulky things that sat behind your fire (that’s probably why they called them “back boilers”, isn’t that clever?).   The Baxi Bermuda Back Boiler was reliable and practical, and occupied over 80% of households within the UK, it was that popular! Back in 2005 however, changes to Part L Building Regulations meant that only high efficiency boilers could be installed………….so the Baxi Bermuda Back Boiler was no more! :(

But wait, don’t cry just yet……

A vast majority of households today still rely on their back boiler, but when back boilers needed to be replaced, it was an expensive and painful task.  Pipe work had to be re-sited, walls redecorated and a new wall hung boiler installed in another part of the home, taking up valuable cupboard space.  Oh the horror of it all!!  Well some really clever chap at Baxi sat down one day (or he could have been standing) and said “Why don’t we just bring the Baxi Bermuda back? That way these poor souls who have to replace their old back boiler, can do it with ease and not end up bald from stress!”  So they have!  (You can smile again now…… :) )

Introducing the new Baxi Bermuda BBU HE Back Boiler – Now a fully condensing Sedbuk Band A Rated back boiler, it is just as efficient as any other boiler on the market today, with a heat output of 15kW (51,180 BTU’s), and fully compliant with the current legislation.  So if you do have to replace your back boiler, you can now do so without demolishing your house.

Not only that, but Baxi have also combined the Baxi Bermuda Back Boiler with a range of beautiful Valor Fire Fronts, from their Valor Fires.  The Valor Fire Front range consists of both traditional and modern designs with an LFE (living flame effect) illumination, guaranteed to easily blend in and enhance your current decor.

So if your back boiler does end up going bump this winter, then there is no need to panic and start hammering down your living room walls….because Baxi have saved the day!  And not only do you get a highly efficient new boiler (which will save you pennies on your bills); you also get a fancy new fire to go with it. What more could you ask for? (the answer to that is nothing so don’t be greedy!) ;)

Gas Safe Register – if they’re not registered then they’re not safe

Gas Safe Logo

What is it?

As from 1 April 2009, the Gas Safe Register is the new recognised gas safety authority in Great Britain and the Isle of Man.

Replacing the renowned CORGI Gas Registration Scheme, this register is designed to protect you from dangerous gas work being carried out on your property.  It therefore prevents non-registered or unqualified engineers from carrying out gas installations such as Boilers and fires, or even gas repairs on existing appliances.  In fact, by law, anyone carrying out such work within your property should be registered on the Gas Safe Register.  So even if they are fully qualified, if they aren’t registered, they are still considered illegal.

How to spot a “Cowboy”

Unqualified or incompetent engineers are most commonly referred to as “Cowboys”, but it isn’t easy recognising one on the off-set (funnily enough they don’t turn up on your doorstep via horseback or wearing a cowboy hat shouting “Yi-haa!”).  However, thanks to the new Gas Safe Register, it is simple to spot a “cowboy” before you allow them to start any work in your home.

Anyone registered on the Gas Safety Register must by law produce a Gas Safe Registered ID Card upon request.  This ID card must show the following:

  • Photographic ID
  • Unique registration number
  • Yellow “Gas Safe Register” Logo
  • Type of gas work they are qualified to do printed on the rear of the card. (if the type of work they are carrying out is not printed, then they are not legally qualified to do it)

If you are still unsure then the Gas Safe Register offer a “check” service, so by entering the engineers registration number online it will verify the details on his registration ID card, or alternatively you can also call them direct and they can tell you over the phone.  It really is that easy.

The Gas Safe Register contact details are available at PlumbNation, just visit www.plumbnation.co.uk and click the Useful Contacts section.

Why is it so important to use someone who is Gas Safe Registered?

You may not realise it, but having any type of gas work carried out within your home can be dangerous if not completed by a qualified or competent engineer.  Illegal gas work can lead to gas leaks, fire explosions and exposure to lethal carbon monoxide, therefore putting not only putting yourself at risk but also your family and friends.

The Gas Safe Register ensures that all registered engineers are fully qualified to carry out gas work safely and securely.

Since its launch in April 2009 the Gas Safe Register has been cracking down on illegal gas work, with a recent study showing a quarter of a million illegal gas jobs being carried out each year, and it estimates that 7,500 illegal engineers are working without the skills or the qualifications to carry out gas work.  Pretty scary stuff!  That is why the Gas Safe Register have an investigation team searching out illegal gas fitters all over the country, who are not registered.

But it isn’t just un-registered engineers who are being targeted, any engineers who are in fact registered on the Gas Safe Register who are carrying out work that they aren’t qualified to do, are also under attack.  So even though they are qualified to install a Gas Boiler, they are not necessarily qualified to install a Gas Fire.

It may all seem a bit melodramatic and over the top, and you have known Bob from down the road for years and after all he is cheap – but it doesn’t mean he’s safe.

So make sure Bob has a Gas Safe Register ID Card with a picture of him smiling away next to his registration number.  Not only that, make sure Bob is actually qualified to fit your new gas fire or install your new combi boiler, because if he isn’t then you shouldn’t be using him, and you should report him to the Gas Safe Register.

But don’t let on it was you who reported him or you can say goodbye to your friendship with Bob from down the road, and don’t expect any more invites for Sunday dinner either.

PlumbNation strongly recommend that if you have had any gas work carried out within your property within the last 6 months, that you nominate your property for a free Gas Safety check which will be carried out by the Gas Safe Register.  Again the contact details for the Gas Safe Register are available at www.plumbnation.co.uk.
